Hello

I'm nearly 70 now

When I was in my early teens I used to read a set of volumes on the Great War.

I seem to remember them as being big and red or brown.

There were about 6 of them (?)

They featured lots of water colour paintings, and as I recall quite a few articles on the VC's won.

My grandfather(s) fought on the western front and one of them bought set, and gave it to my father.

Sadly we were not able to bring them out to New Zealand when we came here in the late 1960's

Can any one suggest their name?

I've searched ebay

I would love to get a set or one or two of them

I have another set called "The History of the Great European War" its in 10 volumes and is red and smaller and its by Stanley McBean Knight and published by Caxton on cheap paper

I would guess at 'Deeds that thrilled the Empire' , i've got two of the volumes ( in red binding ) and they contain many plates of heroic actions ( including many V.C ones )

Deeds that Thrill the Empire came in a two volume set, and a five volume set.

There is a video about the two volume set which shows a number of the plates. Perhaps these may look familiar?

If you don't think it is this publication, you could look through some of the links on the FIBIS Fibiwiki page, First world War, section Historical books online/History series and periodical publications

https://wiki.fibis.org/w/First_World_War#History_series_and_periodical_publications

A six volume series, with some plates,  is

True Stories of the Great War. Tales of Adventure-Heroic Deeds-Exploits Told by the Soldiers, Officers, Nurses, Diplomats, Eye Witnesses. Edited by Francis Trevelyan Miller 1917. In six volumes: Volume I, Vol. II, Vol. III, Vol. IV, Vol. V, Vol. VI. All Archive.org

Cheers

Maureen

Edit: Deeds that Thrill the Empire is available as a  2 volume reprint from Naval & Military Press

Thanks for your replies.

I may have put you on the wrong track.

The book was a complete history of the Great War, naval as well.

I just remember lots of water colour pages of British troops storming trenches, and some pages of VC winners.

Thanks Maureene

That list of books is amazing.

Some of them look very much like the set my grand father had

But it was a long time ago now....
