battle of loos Posted 26 November , 2019 Share Posted 26 November , 2019 good morning, I researche about this soldier : rank : Private Joseph Kennedy number : 459 unit : Royal Irish Rifles Regiment and number : 73267 unit : Machine Gun Corps what is the exact unit in the MGC it served? thank you in advance for your help. regards michel
sotonmate Posted 27 November , 2019 Share Posted 27 November , 2019 (edited) Michel Do you know which RIRifles unit he served ? I can't see any info on that as the MGC Medal Rolls aren't showing his RIR unit. My thinking is that he moved from his Infantry unit to the MG Company of his Brigade/Division, particularly as the MGC Rolls have a block of RIR soldiers who transferred at the same time as they occupy almost all numbers between 73241 and 73269. So, if you can say which Battalion of the RIR I may be able to find out something ! But first I will check for a service record ! Later: None seen. battle of loos Posted 28 November , 2019 Author Share Posted 28 November , 2019 good morning, after a cross-check, I think of the 5th Royal Irish Regiment (Pioneers) to serve well in France. thank's a lot for your help. regards michel
sotonmate Posted 28 November , 2019 Share Posted 28 November , 2019 michel Not so sure of your facts ! The unit you mention, 5 RIRegiment (Pioneers), went off to Gallipoli, and I have already seen that the Medal Rolls show him to be RIRifles. 5 RIRifles were a Reserve unit with only Home Service. corisande Posted 28 November , 2019 Share Posted 28 November , 2019 I am confused about all this. The Medal roll says Royal Irish Rifles (not Regiment)
Dave66 Posted 28 November , 2019 Share Posted 28 November , 2019 If I look at the way bayonets and arms are marked, Royal Irish Regiment is R.I., Royal Irish Rifles is R.I.R. There’s a full list of abbreviations here....http://oldmilitarymarkings.com/brit_bayo.html Dave
battle of loos Posted 29 November , 2019 Author Share Posted 29 November , 2019 good morning, thank's a lot for your answer. I don't know why I focused on the Irish Regiment? while it's Irish Rifles. it does seem obvious to find the unit number in the MGC. I have the same problem with a soldier who was assigned to the MGC in the second unit. regards michel
