I wonder if anyone could tell me which German Units were defending the Bois des Buttes on the opening day of the Nivelle Offensive?

David,

It was the 31ème Regiment d'Infanterie (French) attacking the "Bois des buttes" on 16 April 1917. After a quick research I couldn't find any information about the German units defending the wood, but it seems that the Germans had evacuated their first line to have a better defense position at La Ville-au-Bois prior to the start of the offensive. It makes sense when you look at the map, (J.M.O of the 10th French Division):

PS: I am pretty sure that I spoke to you a couple of years ago at the Thiepval visitor's centre...
