mikereme Posted 7 November , 2019 Share Posted 7 November , 2019 Hello Everyone, Again i am asking help from this great forum..... My research brings me to 5th Camerons who where heavily engaged with the German Assault on the the Darmstrasse (St Eloi Area),Ypres Salient. 25th April 1918... The Battalion Diary states that soldiers went forward to abandoned ammo dumps to recover SAA many times risking the own safety.. Also a soldier had flushed out a group of germans that had occupied an abondoned bunker with his mills bombs... I dont have any names of these brave men....apart from names that were given in the Diary later on in the year, but the 5th Camerons had been invoolved in other battles... could this great forum help me with this task? I thank you in anticipation
o j kirby Posted 7 November , 2019 Share Posted 7 November , 2019 Hello, One of the men is 220326 Sgt. John M Leitch 5th Cameron Highlanders. He was from Lochgilphead, and his records survive. He was awarded the MM. I hope that this helps. If you find any other mention of Sgt. Leitch, please do let me know. It looks as though he was with the 5th Camerons from 8th February 1918 having served in the UK with the 2/8th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was wounded on 19th July 1918 and his participation in the war ended. Cheers, Owain.

o j kirby Posted 26 November , 2019 Share Posted 26 November , 2019 Hello again, I recently went back to my reply and have a bit of an addition for you. There were two entries for Sgt Leitch. The first had an error regarding his number and the second, a correction. I have noted all of the Cameron Highlanders awarded the MM in the same edition of the Gazette. Some will hopefully be members of the 5th. Working backwards: London Gazette Supplement 11/12/1918 Amendments. S/12108 Pte D Cameron, 5th Cameron Highlanders 220326 Sgt J Leitch, 5th Cameron Highlanders. The original listing was in the Edinburgh Gazette September 2nd 1918. The Cameron Highlanders I have noted are as follows. They give place of residence but not battalion. S/14573 LCpl J Bertram Wishaw S/12018 Pte D Cameron Ardgour Corrected above. S/26790 Pte W Clark Clydebank S/10362 Pte W Ferguson Kircaldy S/9949 Sgt A Fraser Foyers 200326 Sgt J M Leitch Lochgilphead Corrected above. S/31088 Pte C Kirkpatrick Musselburgh S/10389 Cpl D McWilliam Milford, Co Armagh 201041 Cpl T A Nicholson Edinburgh S/11962 Sgt T R Smith Lenton 9560 Sgt J W Stobo Leith S/40925 Pte G Sutherland Watten 8550 Sgt G Tew Leith S/18231 Pte J Vickers Hamilton S/40935 Pte J McD Wilson Maybole S/40467 Pte H Wrigley Dewsbury S/40745 Cpl J Joung Poyntzfield I hope that some of the above names might, with a bit of research, add to your quest. Pte Cameron's first name was Duncan, and from Ardgour on the Corran narrows of Loch Linnhe. The Corran Ferry crosses these every day, and it was one of my four changes of transport every school day! All the best, Owain.
