Derby men receiving armlets and money?

In the West Lothian Courier of 10th March 1916, page 5, column 7;-

"WHITBURN NOTES

On Wednesday evening a number of attested men under Derby's Scheme received their armlet and 2s.9d."

I can understand the armlet, but why did they gey money as well?

They were serving soldiers for a day before they were released to the army reserves pending call up.

Quoted from a previous thread on absconding upon enlisting, but...

With a Machine Gun to Cambrai, George Coppard, 1999, pages 1-2

"I attested in a batch of a dozen others and, holding up my right hand, swore to fight for King and Country. The sergeant winked at me as he gave me the King's shilling, plus one shilling and ninepence ration money for that day... On our arrival at Stoughton there was a rush to the canteen to spend what was left of the ration money. A roll call took place, and there were two or three absentees. I never did learn what happened. Could it be that they attested merely to get two shillings and ninepence?"

Thanks Andrew,

2 or 3 absent out of a dozen is quite a high proportion.

Thanks Sepoy,

Your guy obviously didn't rush to the canteen!

Some time ago I also analyzed a summary of this history, I really liked it. For that period it was a bit more complicated to make money, this was probably the reason for those coins.

That's an unusual slant...
