Mates,

I came across this German unit but could find no details on it?

Do you or can you find anything?

Cheers

Hi Steve!

Ausbildungs-Kommando für leichte MG15 (Bergmann), Türkei

Set-up April 1917 by MG-Lehrkursus Döberitz (KM 21.4.1917)

Ersatz from 5.Ers.MG-Komp. Garde-Korps

It belonged to the "Inspektion des MG-Wesens"

Dissolved probably summer 1918 through Garde-Gren.Rgt.4

Mate,

Thank you, I did wonder what a Light MG unit was doing in Palestine, as this unit is not mentioned in any books there?

Large numbers of these LMG's arrived in Palestine in 1918 with Pasha 2 units (146th Regt and 701, 702 and 703 Bn's).

Do you think that unit was combined into these units?

Cheers

Hi Steve!

The training commando for those light Mg had never been in Palestine. They just trained the soldiers in Germany.

The units got their light MG since summer/autumn 1917. The regimental history of IR146 mentioned, the lMG were in november 17 already in the unit.

Mate,

Interesting,

I did see this man shown (I think) with this unit who died there

Scheidt Wilhelm    Schütze    L.M.G. Ausb. Kdo        (died 24-7-17 in St. Stefano) cause not stated? grave at Tarabya Istanbul

While others Are shown possibly PoWs, but that could be my mistake in the old German I am reading

Klink Friedrich    Pte    Deutsches Leichtes Maschinengewehr-Ausbildungskommando für die Türkei    1917-18     (1893 at Jaffa Palestine died 20-9-18) cause not stated?

Lindner Georg    Lt    Deutsches Leichtes Maschinengewehr-Ausbildungskommando für die Türkei    1917-18     (1895 at Glatz ) reported MIA possibly PoW

Any ideas

A quick look in the Verlustlisten and cross referencing the names with the RC database reveals

Ltn. Lindner, taken PoW Samah (Samakh) 29.09.1918

VzFdw. Garmeister, taken PoW Jordan 27.9.1918

VzFdw. Luckas, taken PoW El‘Affule 20.09.1918

Sch. Moritz, taken PoW Tiberias 25.09.1918

with the exception of VzFdw. Luckas, all are recorded in the RC database as belonging to the Deutsches Leichtes MG Ausbildungs Kommando, Luckas‘ unit is just recorded as Ausbildungs Kommando. No doubt checking more of the names will reveal more of the same.

Hello!

That´s clear! The unit is called "... Kommando für die Türkei" (command for Turkey) and NOT "Command IN Turkey". Note the difference...

It was a command in Germany which drilled the MG soldiers for Turkey. Probably they have taken the german unit in which they were listed during their last days in Germany.

The town beside the date of birth is the place of birth, not the place where they died!

It´s very interesting, that there are three soldiers from Essen, my hometown...

Prussian,

Mate clearly many of these men did make it to Turkey/Palestine.

I did wonder, if they trained men in Germany, did they also train men in Turkey.

After the Ottoman 15th Corps left Galica to Palestine (late 1917), numbers of these new LMG's were with these units (19th and 20th Div's), numbers again appeared during 1918 in most units of the Ottoman Army in Palestine.

Did they go to train soldiers in these weapons?

I am only guessing here for a reason to for them to be in Turkey/Palestine?

Along with Charlie's comments where some were taken PoW (thank you charlie), and some died we need to look deeper into this unit.
