RFT Posted 5 October , 2019 Share Posted 5 October , 2019 (edited) Was this individual an RAF Observer? As an AC1 his occupations were listed firstly as 'Clerk' and latterly as 'Wireless Operator'. Other than the Medical Board, the record contains no references to flying officer! From the service record - 'X' QD B. Dpt to A.O.S. 26/6/18 A.O.S. to 17 TDS 28/3/19 Can anyone offer an explanation for the above abbreviations? Have considered that A.O.S. could well be be an abbreviation for Air Observers School? Medical Board Statement 4/5/18 - "Classified as permanently unfit for duty as Flying Officer in any capacity by RAF Medical Board, Heliopolis." Does this statement suggest the individual was an RAF Observer? Rob Edited 5 October , 2019 by RFT Updated text.

Just a thought it could be Artillery Observation School, and his roll could be as a ground wireless operator receiving communication from airborne spotters ? RFT Posted 5 October , 2019 Author Share Posted 5 October , 2019 (edited) Thanks for the link to airhistory.org. I now have a couple answers to the abbreviations but the statement of the Medical Board, which suggests he was a flying officer, still puzzles me. charlie962 Posted 5 October , 2019 Share Posted 5 October , 2019 (edited) 10 minutes ago, RFT said: that doesn't explain the statement of the Medical Board which suggests he was a flying officer. The statement says that a Medical Board classes him as permanently unfit to be one. He might have been under consideration for becoming aircrew but the medical result (which may have been linked to his wounding- gassed 1917) ruled him out. charlie Edited 5 October , 2019 by charlie962
RFT Posted 5 October , 2019 Author Share Posted 5 October , 2019 (edited) Medical Board doesn't say he was "permanently unfit to be.." but rather "permanently unfit for duty as Flying Officer..." (in whatever capacity). Thanks Charlie for your input on this topic. Rob Edited 5 October , 2019 by RFT Thanks.
