Guest Posted 5 October , 2019 Share Posted 5 October , 2019 HMS Surley From 1 Aug 1914 HMS Pembroke, (I know this is a land based 'ship' at Chatham) From 5 March 1915 AMC Ebro From 21 April 1915 HMS Pembroke From 7 Sep 1915 AMC Ebro From 1 April 1916, promoted but continued to serve until 4 Jan 1919 HMS Pembroke From 4 Jan 1919 until demob 12 Feb 1919. What type of ship are they, why so many changes? He finished as a leading seaman. Had served for 12 years prior to the war on various ships. Any information would be helpful to this non naval person thank you
seaJane Posted 5 October , 2019 Share Posted 5 October , 2019 There was no HMS SURLEY. There was, however, an HMS SURLY (Google to find) or SUTLEJ (ditto). This looks like your Armed Merchant Cruiser EBRO (another Google) http://historicalrfa.org/requisitioned-auxiliaries/164-requisitioned-auxiliaries-e/2509-requisitioned-auxiliary-ebro If we could see an image of your source it might be possible to say what was governing the different entries. . Best wishes, sJ

As seaJane says, a list of ships out of context is pretty meanigless. That said, he served in three sea-going ships in the course of the war, interspersed with spells ashore in Chatham barracks (HMS PEMBROKE). Not a notable number of drafts and to answer your "Why?" question - because he was so required by the Naval Service.
