Remembered Today:

Pension Cards: What was separation allowance (for children)?

This is an extract from a pension card for a widow:

I understand the remarriage gratuity. (in fact the widow died only a few years after remarriage.)

I have found at least one other card where the children's pension was held in abeyance while they were eligible for separation allowance.

Can someone please explain what separation allowance was in these cases?

Also the only ledger reference on the card begins "1/WD" (for the widow). Alas it has not survived. I can't find a separate reference for the four children should there be one somewhere?

Separation Allowance was paid for the first 26 weeks after death (4 weeks being paid first of normal wages).

When did the man die ?

This interesting. The father died on 14 November 1914. (He was a recalled reservist.) The mother died on 2 April 1920.

I will send you the full card in a PM tomorrow.

Edit: I have now found three cards where that appears in the note about the widow's remarriage.

Hi Craig

I'm reading that as: Separation Allowance was paid for the first 26 weeks after death (4 weeks of normal wages being paid first) - thus = 30 weeks before any pension kicked in

??? Confirmation / clarification sought please
