Mates,

During a check of some data bases given by Michael and Charlie, these two showed up, but no details on there loss?

Gardener (Gärtner) Friedrich    Flugzeugobermaat Naval    Airforce possibly German Seaplane Sqn (Wasserfliegerabteilung)     1917-1918    (1893 at Landsberg - died 17-1-18) near Imbros (Turkey) possibly with Keppeler cause not stated?

Keppeler Alfons    Flugzeugmaat Naval    Airforce possibly German Seaplane Sqn (Wasserfliegerabteilung)     1917-18    (1888 at Stetternich-Jülich died 17-1-18) near Imbros possibly with Gärtner cause not stated?

I checked some other sources, but the only claim was by another German member of the German Seaplane Sqn (Wasserfliegerabteilung)

Schubert Wilhelm or Georg    Vzfeldw to LtzS Naval    pilot Airforce German Seaplane Sqn (Wasserfliegerabteilung) 11-15

Who claimed shot down a seaplane near Islands 17-1-18

Was this an own goal or is there any British/Allied claims around that time off the Islands of the Dardenells?

Cheers

Ottoman Aviation 1909-1919 by O. Nikolajsen has the following in chapter 12, p.205, re the German seaplane unit based at Nara

On the 17th [January 1918] however a Sablatnig SF.5 crewed by Ensign Kepler and Lt. Görtner disappeared on a flight. The next day a British aircraft dropped a message saying the aircraft had been shot down and the crew killed.”

Royal Naval Air Service, Operations report, 17th to 31st January 1918.  Gliki Air Station, Imbros. 'C' Squadron.

'On the 17th January a special mine reconnaissance, ordered by R.A.E. was carried out, and during this Flight Commander Donald shot down a two-seater seaplane when nearing Suvla.  The machine crashed into the water from 1,000 feet.  The pilot had apparently been killed.  The wreck of the machine was salved by a monitor, which proceeded to within 700 ft. of the wreck.  The machine was of the Friedrichshaven [sic] type.  The body of the observer was picked up, and the engine and gun were brought to Mudros.'

The pilot was  Flt Lt G Donald flying F.1 Camel N6365.  Sturtivant gives the German machine as:  'FF seaplane dest 5m S V Smola C.D.1 (sic) 17.1.18'

Mates,

Thank you for that, I believed it may of had something to do with the German Naval Sortie around the Islands

Michael, Nikolajsen mention of Görtner is interesting, as a man by that name and same German Seaplane Sqn, had been shot down on the 30 Sept 1917 in that area by Alcock and Mellings

All mentions of the action on 17 Jan 1918, his name is given as Gardener (Gärtner)

Cheers

Michael,

I notice also these men lost around Xanthi (Bulgaria) during 1917

Serno states that a group from the German Seaplane group was sent there late 1917, but these men are shown earlier?

Auer Gottlieb    Flugzeugobermaat Naval    Airforce possibly German Seaplane Sqn (Wasserfliegerabteilung)     1917-    (1895 at Ohnasketten - died 25-3-17) at Xanthi (Bulgaria) cause not stated? possibly lost with Baldeweg in accident?

Baldeweg John    Flugmeister / Vzfeldw Naval    Airforce possibly German Seaplane Sqn (Wasserfliegerabteilung)     1917-    (1892 at Bautzen - died 25-3-17) at Xanthi (Bulgaria) cause not stated? possibly lost with Auer in accident?

Others lost there around these dates?

Immisch Heinrich    LtzS Naval    Airforce possibly German Seaplane Sqn (Wasserfliegerabteilung)     1917-    (1895 at Leipzig died 5-6-17) near Xanthi Bulgaria cause not stated

Ludwig Walter    Flugzeugmaat Naval    Airforce possibly German Seaplane Sqn (Wasserfliegerabteilung)     1917-    (1887 at Neu-Langzow-Lebus died 9-3-17) at Xanthi (Bulgarien) possibly lost with Lt Wild in accident?

Wild Julius    LtzS Naval    Airforce possibly German Seaplane Sqn (Wasserfliegerabteilung)     1916-17    (1894 at Bayreuth died 9-3-17) at Xanthi (Bulgarien) possibly lost with Maat Ludwig in accident?

Any ideas on what unit or how these men lost there life?

Cheers
