Alan Bentley Posted 16 September , 2019 Posted 16 September , 2019 (edited) This is the account of the German Christmas Day 1915 bombing of 2Wing RNAS on Imbros. There is mention of a photographic flight. Any ideas as to who the pilot might have been? Apart from my father with the cross, I would like to identify the others in the picture, I know its a tall order! Edited 16 September , 2019 by Alan Bentley
michaeldr Posted 16 September , 2019 Posted 16 September , 2019 2 Wing were very unlucky 3 Wing were in the middle of a Christmas Day football match, officers v men, when a Turkish 'plane flew over them Arthur Beeton recalled that after the 'plane flew around the pitch, he went off and dropped his bombs harmlesly in the dunes.... "a proper gentleman he was" [from RNAS 1912-1918 by Brad King]
michaeldr Posted 16 September , 2019 Posted 16 September , 2019 A little background info re the attack O. Nikolajsen in his Ottoman Aviation 1909-1919 has “... three Albatrosses bombed the British airfield at Imbros on Christmas Day ....
Alan Bentley Posted 16 September , 2019 Author Posted 16 September , 2019 (edited) The addition Is Freddy Knowles. In his flying log H A Buss, pilot in 2 Wing says that on Christmas Day he took off in Voisin 8502 from Imbros with Lt. Jones to spot for HMS Theseus over Helles. He was attacked by a German a/c with some bullet damage. Strange, no mention of the bombing raid. Edited 16 September , 2019 by Alan Bentley
