I believe he may also have been Pipe-Major of the 5th Royal Highlanders between 1913 and 1915. 

 

Needless-to-say, he played before moving to Canada and is mentioned in the 'Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald' of 31st Aug 1906 playing for the highland dancing at the Glengarnock Highland Games.  There is further mention of him piping in newspapers dating back to 1903, 1905 and 1907.

Aad Boode in his ''Pipe Majors of Military Pipes & Drums from 1679 to Present Day' records Aikman's predecessor as P/M William Johnston (b. 1871 Toronto, died 1946). 

 

Recorded as P/M between 1907 and 1913. 

 

And before Johnston it was a Pipe-Major David Manson (P/M from 1897 to 1907). 

 

A couple more are listed prior to that as well.     

 

The Pipe-Major between 1923 and 1932 was also called William Johnston but I don't know whether it was the same man or not.
