Thanks Mark. It may seem a daft question, but does this identify the wearer as the member of the gun crew who "laid" the gun? In layman's terms is "laying" the gun aiming it?

Simon

I think he was the man responsible for "setting" (Or aiming) the gun.

But I'm not 100% on this, there are some excellent artillery experts in the forum that can help further.

Thanks Mark - I will Wait to see if any artillery expert (although you sound as if you know what you're talking about!) picks up this thread. If not I will post the question more directly.

It is a qualified layer who sets the sights and lays the gun for line and elevation.

You beat me to it, John! I was just going to confirm the image as a gun layer's proficiency badge. A WWI 18-pounder gun of the RFA typically had two layers, one on the left of the gun for line and the other on the right for elevation.

Is that a rank - Gun Layer? or Just Layer?
