ss002d6252 Posted 13 August , 2019 Posted 13 August , 2019 I'm trying to find the number of horses & vehicles with the BEF in August 1914 - I can find 53,000 horses mentioned but I can't locate the number of vehicles, can anyone help ? Craig
Admin DavidOwen Posted 13 August , 2019 Admin Posted 13 August , 2019 Motor vehicles on Peace Time establishment as in 1914 were Lorries, Tractors etc 807 (of which 727 subsidized, 80 WD property), 20 cars and vans, zero ambulances and 15 motorcycles. On mobilisation there were an additional 334 Lorries/Tractors etc., 133 cars and vans, zero ambulances, 116 motor cycles. https://archive.org/details/statisticsofmili00grea/page/876 Struggling to find the number of horse drawn vehicles, should be somewhere in there!

Ron Clifton Posted 13 August , 2019 Posted 13 August , 2019 Hello Craig Some years ago I compiled tables of all the transport the BEF (of six divisions) would have needed, according to War Establishments 1914. There were supposed to be 55,073 horses and the following vehicles: 2,330 bicycles 107 one-horse carts 1,426 two-horse carts 2,822 two-horse wagons 657 four-horse wagons 2,304 six-horse wagons (excluding gun carriages) 510 gun carriages 291 motor-cycles 190 motor cars 17 vans 1,164 lorries 75 tractors 101 trucks Ron
