Do you have anything on Ostrohove , near Boulogne, Was it an IBD or just reception camp?

Just reception camps as far as I'm aware.

You could download (for free) the War Diary of the Calais Base Commandant and see if there is anything of relevance to your query

I don't, this was just what was in the list in the diary.

I've not seen a list of facilities - I am aware of the ASC petrol filling facilities etc etc but past that I don't know. I might give the diaries another look to see what they say.

Thanks Craig, there is mention in a thread in the forum of significant facilities set up in what had been an old woodmill and canal that was named after the family that owned it.  A large place, it seems that associated camps were implicated in the “mutinies” (Percy Toplis?), but what I’m trying to ascertain is what medical facilities were there.  Perhaps unsurprisingly given its strategic location, there appears to have a really quite large military administrative concentration at Calais, but its extent is as yet unclear.

I'll take a look tomorrow and see what I can see, I'm sure there'll be mention in what I have.

Any particular medical facilities?

Base facilities certainly seem to be almost forgotten about, so little is known.

Yes, I think it’s a medical base facility, possibly No4.

From what I can find by going through the medical history so far to add to the above.

Havre (#2 depot, moved to Calais  in 1915), Boulogne (#1 depot), Rouen  (#3), Etaples (#6 opened in July 1915)*, Abbeville (#13 depot, opened  end of 1916).

(official medical history)

Calais also later had,

Splint making shop
Cutler' shop for repair of instruments
Electroplating plant for medical instruments

5 medical depots - Havre (#2 depot, moved to Calais  in 1915), Boulogne (#1 depot), Rouen  (#3), Etaples, Abbeville (#13 depot, opened  end of 1916). I think #4 was probably Etaples.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble Craig.  If there was a #13 depot one would assume their might have been a #4 of some type, somewhere, if they followed in numerical sequence (I realise not always a given).  Perhaps one or all of the Med workshops that you mentioned as at Calais comprised a depot.

The reason I asked is because a poster on another matter has shown a service record that I am confident reads 4 Med B BD, and states that its location was Calais.  I was/am curious as to what its function might have been.

Just edited my post as you posted to add something else I found.

They used #1-3, then jumped to #6 and #13 (and later a #14 in Italy).

Apologies, mind was still processing and didn’t seem necessary to add another post.  Thank you.  There’s something odd I think, as I’m pretty sure it says ‘4 Med’, as mentioned.

The official histories have no #4 medical base depot (or #4 advanced medical stores depot) in their list of units so it's not clear what the clerk was referencing.

Thanks Terry - the ASC Petrol depot is interesting as I was trying to tie it down for something else (location of the petrol can filling station).

I had forgotten about this thread. Maybe this is the right place to post this:

“I was researching a MT driver in the CASC. In January 1919, he was posted to the CASC Pool, Beaurainville and then to the MT Detachment, CASC Depot Beaurainville. This town/village had not appeared in any other records I had looked at. Were there other CEF installations there?“

All the best,

Gary

Thank you for that list Terry, it’s interesting and gives a good idea of the sheer scale of what was going on in and around the Calais area.

There is an error on my part - in  C Section No 7  Labour Coy, Remarks. It should read "Formerly  No 1 Sect of 13 Labour Coy"

Thank you Craig and Terry.  This thread is turning out to be a very useful work of reference.  Is there any mechanism whereby Mods can anchor it into one place that can be easily found in perpetuity?

I've added the details to one of the forum blogs. Discussion can be kept here and the other data saved in to the blog (i'll add any more to the blog as it appears).
