Pistol supply - crates or boxes?

Can someone please perhaps tell me how issue pistols were supplied?

 

Obviously, officers would have generally purchased theirs privately, and would have come boxed individually.

 

But for general issue purposes - NCOs, MG teams, RFC. tanks etc - would they have been supplied in crates (even if small, say, six to a unit)?

And if so: has anyone got an image of said crate?
