Remembered Today:

277th Siege Battery

Recommended Posts

I am currently researching Cpl Robert Henry Morris who served in the Royal Garrison Artillery, I have MIC, Roll and service papers that show his unit was the 277th Siege Battery. I have had a good look around the LLT and Chris's Siege battery list only goes up to 258th, no mention of 277th. Royal Artillery is a new area for me so I have a number of questions and would appreciate any help forum pals can provide:

How can I find out what Siege Brigade the 277th were in?

Were Siege Brigades attached to Divisions or Corps?

Are there war diaries for Siege Brigades or Batteries?

Hello gardenerbill and Acknown

Throughout 1918 277 Siege Battery was part of 90 (9.2" howitzer) Brigade RGA, formerly 90 Heavy Artillery Group. During the whole of 1918 the brigade was part of Third Army Troops. The relevant War Diaries are in this file:

WO 95/397 90 Brigade Royal Garrison Artillery 1917 Apr. - 1919 May
WO 95/397 277 Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery 1916 Oct. - 1917 Dec.
From the end of 1917, when HAGs were redesignated as brigades, individual batteries generally did not keep separate diaries, their activities being recorded in the Brigade diary.

The diaries can be downloaded from TNA's website for £3.50 each, but are not available on Ancestry.
