Remembered Today:

Help with wounding

Hi all,

I am researching Bmbdr 54029 William McKay 245th RGA and would like some help interpreting this part of his record. I understand that he was wounded on the 25th March 1918 with a GSW to his left ankle. What is the "Scotia" or "Scolia" part?

Kindest Regards,

Andrew

Possibly this boat, HMS 'Scotia'-

The two letters before it are difficult to read and may be A.Y for Auxiliary Yacht, which doesn't line up with that ship. H.T (Hired Transport) is a possibility but it looks like an A.

Scott,

I was wondering whether it was the HMS Scotia but it looks like an AY to me

Could be Auxiliary Transport (A.T).

(The T's are similar in To and Scotia)

Just noted in that story that the Scotia was damaged by a bomb at Calais on 18 July 1918 and quickly returned to service. Your man was transported a little over a month later. The ship was in the area at the time.

'Evacuated to England per A? "Scotia"' - can't get the second of those two letters (T as in Aux Transport seems plausible though); certainly suggests that's the ship.

Cheers, Pat

Pat,

I think that is what I'll assume and that the clerk got it wrong somehow.

Thank you,

Andrew
