That would be a for someone who did the 6 counties to answer I am afraid. I would be very interested in the stats for there also.

So Tom, perhaps when we get a united Ireland again, then you will have to research the missing 6 Counties

No Corisande, it has nothing to do with an United Ireland, the reason I did not include the 6 counties was It was too far away and I would have to visit each county library to delve into their files, I run on a zero budget. I don't get support from anyone, and have been unemployed for the past ten years after the bust. I never asked for money just support. Those in the powers that be have been ignoring my pleas for 18 years and I am nearly 70. The 26 counties was just about doable within my lifetime but including the 6 counties would have knobbled me time wise, and nothing would have been completed. With support the 32 counties would have been finished 8 years ago, mores the pity.

Lieutenant William M Crozier, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, reported missing, was hit twice before he reached the German wire, then he continued to advance gallantly till he reached the first German trench. He was seen to try to take cover in a shell hole, after which no more is known of his movements.

Thank you Wandererpaul. These are published at cost, as it is the purpose of this project to remember our Irish heroes, not to make money. Due to recent activity on this forum with death certificates, IFCP, and databases that have become available within the past two years I am bringing out a 16th volume-'The Gray Area' which will include many newly found names missing from previous books and others that do not qualify for IFCP, and also newly accepted ones in IFCP. Once I hear from Terry with the full list accepted recently I will be in a better position to proceed with it.

Amen Tom for all those lost on 1st July 1916, from all causes.  The thump of artillery took a fair few as well, not just the machine gun.

Might I ask if all those you list are included in your splendid  volumes on the 26 counties??  An increasing sideline from my own local casualties (North-East London) is the number of non-Irish serving in "Irish" regiments. The Roll on Ancestry nowadays is a splendid work of fiction but,alas, many many Londoners were put into Irish regiments  to shore them up.The politics of it all is beyond GWF-the actuality of what happened is very much within our remit.

 

    If one sits behind a German machine gun of the Great War, with on'e's hands on the trigger mechanism, then the British (or Empire) uniform in front of that gunner would not distinguish whether a man was Irish, whether he was Catholic or Protestant, whether he was from the 26 counties or the 6. Such is my simple view. History is what it is, politics is what it aint.

    Both you  and Corisande have profound depths of knowledge all  things Great War and Irish. Any other views coloured by events subsequent to 1st July 1916 should ideally be conducted over several large glasses of the black stuff and the only enduring difference of opinion should be on who pays for the curry afterwards.

1/7/16 was too much of a tragedy for all that anyone could do other than drop the odd tear into the glass of the black stuff while raising it to the memory of all those lost,wounded,maimed or scarred on that terrible day. I think there is a good case for saying that just as First Day is regarded as the worst day in British history, it has a claim to being considered the worst in Ireland's history as well-for all communities and all counties (not forgetting the Fastnet Rock)

One sympathizes with Tom, of course, and I must mention at the same time that corisande has helped me in the past, thereby upholding all that is good about the Great War Forum!

I possess the medals of only one Irishman (Captain D. V. McCollum, IARO, from Cork), who - as it happened - had a "good" War, and on that fateful day was with the Erinpuras in Mesopotamia. Lucky? He became a staff officer shortly before Kut, and in 1918 was officiating Political Agent, Kuwait.

Frederick Rooney named above was a distant relative of mine. He served with 1st battalion of Royal Inniskilling fusiliers part of the 29th Division. He was a veteran of  Gallipoli, landing there in April 1915 and was wounded in June of that year. He went over the top near Beaumont Hamel on 1st of July. He was initially recorded as wounded in the casualty lists which was published in the newspaper, but alas he was dead and his body never recovered. He was 22 years old. Rooney was a Dubliner from Chancery street. He had three brothers who fought in and survived the war. (one was a pre-war regular with the skins, one in second Leinster’s and one with 6/RDF). His first cousin also called Frederick Rooney and born in the same year (1894) was killed in Gallipoli in 1915 with the 1st RDF.
