Hello I am currently researching the life of Francis Curran from Belfast who was born in 1875, tragically he died on the 1/2 October 1960 at the Battle of the Ancre Heights his military service career started at the age of 16 when he joined the Royal Navy for which I have his service record he served until the 1890’s. E0781525-7E02-46A9-B778-1E5752A20874.jpeg.6758c1c5c38ae1b51b744a2bdf40c580.jpeg

From his 5th C.M.R. Service record found here on his attestation papers when he joined on the 22 June 1915  he gave former service as “2 Years South Africa FF 1900 - 1902” my question is this, as  Im trying to piece together his life story and would welcome any pointers, what is FF and are there any on line resources that might have service records for him - any pointers and help gratefully received I have posted copy of attestation for reference.

South African Field Force =- book here:https://antiquarianauctions.com/lots/south-african-field-force-casualty-list-1899-1902-1973- (to show it existed)

This https://www.angloboerwar.com/name-search has records of a Francis Curran serving in both Driscolls Scouts and the Imperial Light Horse. The medal roll for the Driscoll's Scouts (Ancestry) shows he previously served in the Imperial LH (also Ancestry) so it is the same man.  Whether he is yours I don't know..  I am also not sure whether these two units were part of the SA FF or whether it was separate.  Certainly the name appears only in the two units nominal rolls and medal rolls.  There appears to be no service records..

The dates do point to the Anglo Boer War, there are sites devoted to that conflict you might like to try.

Thank you Max that is a great starting point and I appreciate the directions I am new to this research but like most I am getting “hooked” and the more I find out the more I want  to know LOL 😂 can I impose on you to suggest some of the devoted sites you mentioned - and thank you in anticipation

WWW.angloboerwar.com has a name search and a unit search.  It also has a forum.  Ancestry has the medal rolls.  Findmypast also has Anglo Boer War records. I don't see any record that links Francis with anything that identifies him as yours though.

Good luck.
