paul.pengelly Posted 28 June , 2019 Share Posted 28 June , 2019 Looking for help with R.E Tunnelling companies in late 1915 ,Ploegsteert Wood area, 171st ,and possibly 182nd and in particular any reference to the supervision or training of Canadian tunnellers. My Great Uncle an ex -miner joined the 1st Bn,1st Canadian Division,5th Sept 1915 in their trenches in the Ploegsteert Wood area, but only lasted till November 20th when he was hit by shrapnel and evacuated to England. Most of his service history record is of medical records as he spent 18 months in various hospitals, but after re -reading them ,i spotted he was in the Mining Section . I poured through as many relevant Canadian war diaries / books as I could,(but it seems the ones I need are not transcribed yet) but finding out that the Canadians were in the process of forming 3rd Bde Tunneling Company with ex miners from about August 1915 onwards, The 171st /182nd were tunnelling in this now Canadian sector and I have seen references to them supervising the Canadians,is there anything from the relevant British war diaries to expand on this.
