Cassidy Medals Posted 20 June , 2019 Share Posted 20 June , 2019 I've had this newspaper clipping for awhile......and always wondered if it was possible to work out who the Cassidy in the photo is. What units served at Suvla? What units were the last to leave Suvla? I have a MIC spreadsheet of all the Cassidy's who served in WW1.......Once I have an idea of the Units, I'll list all the Cassidy Officers of equal or higher rank and perhaps we can work out who it is together. Thanks in advance for your help with this.
michaeldr Posted 21 June , 2019 Share Posted 21 June , 2019 The last units to leave Suvla are listed in the table seen in Sketch 32, the evacuation of Suvla, in the British OH, Vol.II, p.458/9 IX Corps HQ Details - 26 4/Ghurkhas - 398 2nd Mounted Div - 1,139 13th Div - 3,938 88th Inf Bde - 1,265 11th Div - 3,148 Artillery - 425 RNACD - 72 Naval Beach Parties -200 The last two units mentioned (Naval machine gunners and Beach Parties) can probably be illiminated The caption in your clipping begins with the word 'Destruction' and probably refers to the destruction of stores. It is possible therefore that Cassidy belonged to the ASC (?) It may be of interest to note that the destruction of stores at Suvla included "nearly a million and a half rations of preserved meat, over a million rations of bisuits and 100 tons of bacon, besides large amounts of forage, and other commodities." (Beadon's history of the RASC, Vol.II) The 'destruction' was not altogether successful however; see Kannengiesser, p.253, detailing kms of telephone wire (300) & barbed wire (180), sandbags, tents etc etc etc, including "I will only just mention the enormous amount of splendid sides of bacon, each beautifully packed in a clean white bag. The Turks greatly detest anything to do with the domus (pig), so that the Germans received untouched the whole of these supplies. Two days later I was able to despatch two wagons loaded with bacon to the Germans in the Southern Group.”

Falloden Posted 2 July , 2019 Share Posted 2 July , 2019 I have a lengthy and interesting letter written by my grandfather dated Alexandria, 15.02.1916. He was Master of HMT East Point at Suvla and describes how they secretly evacuated troops: " We sailed away with 400 troops on Board, brought down at night straight from the firing line. The troops were First Scottish Horse (dismounted) - "Viscount Barrington's son and heir (of the Scottish Horse) was in charge of our troops and Baron de Roebeck's (son) slept under the cabin table" I believe that this took place around the 16 December 1915. alantwo Posted 4 July , 2019 Share Posted 4 July , 2019 (edited) In the War Diary for 9th Corps Staff there is a note that the destruction of stores was the responsibility of the GOC 13th Division, which may or may not help. Regards Alan Edit: I think more correctly I should have said 9th Corps General Staff. Edited 4 July , 2019 by alantwo

Thank you for your responses, which I have read with much interest. JP - Awesome work....you beat me to the post by a country mile......I had narrowed it down to 2 x Lieut's both with the ASC. One of which was John Reginald Cassidy. I have been slowly going through the London Gazettes looking at promotions etc..... to see which one of these Gents might be the missing piece of the puzzle......I saw J. R. Cassidy was MID but could not seem to find it in the LG. Do you know the date of the LG and what his MID was for specifically? On a side note with ref to Sub Lieut Henry Arthur Cassidy, he was also MID for Gallipoli. I have two of his medals in my collection, (photo attached) the Victory medal is a name erased medal that I bought from E-bay some years ago so that I could display the MID emblem. I have most of his documents from the UK National Archives, but recently discovered another file which is not availabe on-line, I am presently in the process of having it scanned and sent to me. Cheers *hopalong* - Cassidy Medals

I haven't looked in the London Gazette. JP
