familyhistoryman Posted 19 June , 2019 Share Posted 19 June , 2019 Hi I would like to know where the 53rd Bn Welsh Regiment was based in June 1919. I am research Arthur Lamb Norse 67243 53rd Bn Welsh Regiment when he drowned in the Rhine on 22nd June 1919. According to the newspaper report of his death (see below) he was buried at Poppelsdorf Cemetery, Bonn but the CWGC has him at Cologne Southern Cemetery but no indication of a reburial. Regards Tony The Darwen News, Saturday Jul 5, 1919 Soldier Drowned An intimation has been received by Mrs Norse, who resides at 146 Sudell Road, that her son, Private Arthur Norse, of the 53rd Battalion Welsh Regiment, serving with the British Army on the Rhine, was drowned on Monday week whilst bathing in the Rhine. A companion tried to rescue him, but failed. The deceased was 19 years of age. A letter received from the chaplain states that several attempts were made to rescue him by comrades, and also by a German civilian, but all efforts failed. He was buried with full military honours, in the British section of the Poppelsdorf Cemetery, Bonn, on June 28th. The deceased soldier attended Belgrave Congregational Chapel. Previous to enlisting he was employed at Messrs Woods and Almond’s.
MaxD Posted 19 June , 2019 Share Posted 19 June , 2019 War diary here: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7351913 The CWGC site notes that he and others were all "concentrations" ie they were initally buried elsewhere and re-buried (in his case in June 1919) in South Cologne. Unusually, there is no concentration sheet showing the first interment but the newspaper is almost certainly correct. Max
MaxD Posted 19 June , 2019 Share Posted 19 June , 2019 Looking at the preview image, the battalion did have elements around Bonn and specifically in Poppelsldorf. Max
