Joy Lynch Posted 31 January , 2005 Share Posted 31 January , 2005 I had not previously realised that Portland Stone was 'always'used in the creation of Memorials in England and elsewhere (?). A worthy tribute !
Terry Denham Posted 31 January , 2005 Share Posted 31 January , 2005 Josephine This is not so. Many different types of stone are used in the UK for memorial headstones and other memorials. Portland is simply the most common. In Scotland and elsewhere many stones are made of granite and in Wales of slate. You will see reddish stones and green ones. Other stones used are Hopton Wood, Boticcino Limestone etc. If you search the Forum you will find a number of discussions on the subject and several photos of different stones.
