Dragoon Posted 10 June , 2019 Share Posted 10 June , 2019 Hi The only units I know who wore the Royal Cypher are the Provost Staff Corps and Norfolk Yeomanry, I believe there is another but I cannot remember. Maybe if you move this thread to Badges and Uniforms, an expert may provide the answer. Chris
CorporalPunishment Posted 10 June , 2019 Share Posted 10 June , 2019 (edited) The crown and cypher badges were worn by a number of units such as the Royal Defence Corps, the Corps of Army Schoolmasters, the Norfolk Yeomanry, the Military Provost Staff Corps and also by Barrack Wardens. I think the Norfolk Yeomanry cap badge was larger than the one in the photo so I would go for the Royal Defence Corps. Being a Private would rule out MPSC and CAS and he is clearly not a Barrack Warden. Pete. Edited 10 June , 2019 by CorporalPunishment

Gunner Hall Posted 10 June , 2019 Share Posted 10 June , 2019 Didn't the RDC have a scroll below "Royal Defence Corps" Until 1917? This could be hidden by the chin strap through.
CorporalPunishment Posted 10 June , 2019 Share Posted 10 June , 2019 As far as I can tell the RDC badge with the title scroll was a scarce badge and the plain crown and cypher badge was usually worn. Pete.
Andrew Marshall Posted 10 June , 2019 Author Share Posted 10 June , 2019 (edited) Thanks all for the help The only details I have of him are Born 4 May 1882 Nantmel, Radnorshire, Wales - he had two sisters and four brothers (one of which was my great grandfather) Was married in 1906 in Wiltshire was living in Crickhowell, Breconshire, Wales in 1911 and moved to Cardiff sometime He died 1959 in Cardiff He was a gardener by trade Could well be the RDC - now that I know that it not likely that he was in the MPSC I will try again with the some digging- hard to achieve without service papers or a service number! Graeme - thanks for touching up the photo it looks much better! Edited 10 June , 2019 by Andrew Marshall forgot detail
