boctok Posted 30 May , 2019 Share Posted 30 May , 2019 Reading an account of a Christmas Dinner in Mesopotamia with men of the Machine Gun Corps there's a reference to 'Spargette Fish'. Any guesses as to what that might have been? I'm presuming some canned fish, but Google didn't give me any hits. Anyone encountered anything similar, or got any suggestions? Admin DavidOwen Posted 30 May , 2019 Admin Share Posted 30 May , 2019 Could it be spaghetti just spelt incorrectly?
boctok Posted 31 May , 2019 Author Share Posted 31 May , 2019 Thanks for the suggestion David --- yeah, 'spaghetti' was also Google's suggestion as a close-word-match - but it just didn't sound like a gastronomic match! Certainly, could be a possibility though - so appreciate the contribution!
Gunner Hall Posted 3 June , 2019 Share Posted 3 June , 2019 "Spargel" is apparently German for asparagus. Not sure Asparagus is / was available to the Catering Corps in Mespot though.
jonbem Posted 3 June , 2019 Share Posted 3 June , 2019 Spargette means "spread" in Italian I think so it could be fish paste? Or if for the officers perhaps some Gentleman's relish (anchovy paste)?
jonbem Posted 3 June , 2019 Share Posted 3 June , 2019 (edited) for a little more clarity, hence I guess "spargette" is "scatter" but could be "spread" Edited 3 June , 2019 by jonbem
