temptage Posted 11 May , 2019 Share Posted 11 May , 2019 Well there aren't enough men there to form a Battalion. It could have been all men who signed up who worked on a single Estate. My guess, because of numbers, is it is a private Army
tbirduk Posted 12 May , 2019 Share Posted 12 May , 2019 (edited) Could it be a Public School OTC? Large variation in height in front rank, and there appear to be non Participants in the Distant "garden area" Edited 12 May , 2019 by tbirduk
Admin Michelle Young Posted 12 May , 2019 Admin Share Posted 12 May , 2019 I think that's a good call, not sure which one though. Possibly Charterhouse?

bobpike Posted 13 May , 2019 Author Share Posted 13 May , 2019 Thank you all, very informative and I tend towards the Charterhouse idea although my photo seems to show the fountain only and not the small, square pond, Is there a Charterhouse archivist? PhilB Posted 13 May , 2019 Share Posted 13 May , 2019 The square pond is there at the end of the lawn!

I have had this reply from the Archivist at Charterhouse. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The answer is that your photo is indeed of the Charterhouse Cadet Corps on parade in Founder’s Court at Charterhouse, Godalming in c1905. Kind regards, Catherine Smith Charterhouse Archivist ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So it actually predates WW1. TEW Posted 14 May , 2019 Share Posted 14 May , 2019 Just about to add that the Statue of Thomas Sutton is not present so must pre-date 1911. Statue is now at the back of your photo near the path almost in line with the fountain. You can just make out the urn that pre-dates the statue. temptage Posted 14 May , 2019 Share Posted 14 May , 2019 I have just had another email from Catherine Smith: Hi Tony, I can guarantee that the photo pre-dates 1911, when a statue was installed in Founder’s Court, and must be after 1905 when the Corps uniform changed from bush hats to caps. My best guess would be 1906 because we have a very similar photo taken from a different angle of Founder’s Court that could very well be the same parade (attached).
