Casualty Pte W.Duffy King's Liverpool Regt - was this schoolteacher a regular soldier or Clergyman ?

Firstly, have I got the right man in this newspaper clip and secondly was he an active fighting soldier or did he have a clergy type role ?

Indeed. A 'clergy type role' would not go well with the rank of 'private'.
