Dear All,

The Consul [later Sir John Ernest Buttery Hotson, KCSI, OBE, VD and an Acting Governor of Bombay who survived an assassin’s bullet at Poona on 22 Jul 1931], made out a very good report concerning a Political (Capt A. W. Fagan, IARO), whose medals I hold.

I was most fortunate to acquire Images of Fagan (although the one attached is not confirmed: he was possibly the Officer standing at left, wearing a forage cap), but have been unable to find one of the extremely capable J. E. B. Hotson. Can a Great War Forum friend oblige, please...?2147455197_Faganpossiblystandingatleft.jpg.ef261091ae47c92b52f5b1379de8225f.jpg

Kindest regards,

Kim.

Dear michaeldr,

Many thanks for that.

One of the few gaps in my Arthur William Fagan saga is now closed. Super!

Hotson was furthermore, not as I had imagined him...

Kindest regards,

Kim.

Ah...but don't forget that by the time the photograph was taken he was already 55 years old

regards

Michael

Dear Michael,

Yes, you are right.

It would be interesting, of course, to see a photograph of Hotson in full attire as acting Gov of Bombay.

Having said that, I was delighted to have any Image!

A. W. Fagan got nothing in the way of a decoration, possibly due to his being in hospital, later in the campaign. He had been a Scholar at Winchester, BA, Oxford, a Fencer for G73675757_A.W.FaganWinchesterscholar.jpg.3b39f0278f78a979658740c860734c9f.jpg2009670884_A.W.FaganGSMS.PERSIA.jpg.c2a8a8a378ab44547fa062206cfbcab0.jpgreat Britain at the Olympics in Stockholm, and had joined the Indian Civil Service. It just shows the capabilities of one junior officer of the IARO, in those days...

Kindest regards,

Kim.

A somewhat unusual family name. I wonder if he was related to the current President of the Gallipoli Association; Captain Christopher Fagan MBE, DL

Dear Michael,

Quite possibly.

I was in correspondence some time ago with a Christopher Fagan, who was extremely kind and helpful. It appeared that there were many branches of the Fagan family, however.

Such families are noticeable, inasmuch as they invariably displayed both gallantry and capability in time of War.

In my relatively modest medal collection I have a group to a Wedderburn-Maxell, whose brother was also decorated; the same goes for a Moberly, and my own family had three MCs...

Kindest regards,

Kim.
