Gunner Bailey Posted 14 April , 2019 Share Posted 14 April , 2019 Stunning stuff About 10 years ago someone put an Auction catalogue on the forum for a military sale in 1919. Everything from military sheds to Whippet Tanks to Grenades, Field Guns, and tons of brass cases. Life was rather different then.

No. 922 "German Machine Gunner's Leg Irons" for chaining machine gunners to their guns rather than retreat, surely a fantasy piece? Im not 100% but I believe German machine gunners had a harness so they could carry the machine gun more easily. But when the machine gunners were killed it would appear that the German was chained to the gun. I'm happy to be corrected. Chris The reason for me asking is it can't be 1919, the reason being is that in the British Army cap badges there is a Royal Tank Corps badge, the Fear Naught scroll Tanks badge didn't come out til 1924. Just an observation Chris
ServiceRumDiluted Posted 17 April , 2019 Share Posted 17 April , 2019 In the book 'Letters from Verdun' American ambulance driver Avery Wolf details the bundle of souvenirs sent home in a letter dated 1.3.18 "Nose of a German 77 shell, unloaded and safe, but don't handle it too much. Sign of the 'Crown Prince Tunnel', one of three from under Mort Homme, Two small French 37mm shells, also safe for handling. Key to the opera house door at Verdun. Stained glass from Verdun Cathederal. Three French and one German Sabres. Two watercolours by a French friend of mine. Two French shells (75mm) which have been engraved. Two paper knives I made out of regular bullets. One German helmet and a skull I picked up on a trip up to Mort Homme." Quite matter of fact, but I suppose if you were in the habit of walking around the Verdun battlefield in 1918 then skulls must be two a penny. depaor01 Posted 17 April , 2019 Share Posted 17 April , 2019 There was no squeamishness about skulls at that time. Even Allied ones. In case anyone is unaware of this recent news item... https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/postcolonial-blog/2017/sep/25/the-anzac-skull-that-tells-a-shocking-and-tragic-story-of-battlefield-violence
arantxa Posted 18 April , 2019 Author Share Posted 18 April , 2019 Hello I agree about the Tank Corp badge..it just says established 1918 I bought in on ebay about 15 years ago from USA its intere4sting that you can pay for items in unused stamps..i think its aimed at shops who can put on a display to entice customers ...an iron cross 2nd class which today is relatively cheap is quite expensive compared to other items that are for sale ..any way now we know why every thing is in the USA
