Billy Bittles Posted 2 June , 2003 Share Posted 2 June , 2003 108th Infantry Brigade : 13th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles (1st Co. Down Volunteers) I cannot give you an exact number yet mutley as i am researching that very subject at the moment too, but i can give you a quote from my 36th (Ulster) Division at the Somme website at www.belfastsomme.com in which an officer is taking the roll call on July 3rd 1916............ "In the Co. Down Volunteers David John Bell called out the roll. Name after name was read out and nobody answered. It seemed that only about one man in ten among the 13th Rifles had been left on his feet" I think you will find lots to intrest you at my website. After you have finished here at The Long, Long Trail, pay a visit to the South Belfast Friends of the Somme Association website
