johnreed Posted 27 January , 2005 Share Posted 27 January , 2005 I would say that it was a Lance Bombadier of the Artillery about 1898 who was a member of the Best Battery in the inter Best Battery Competition. Now days it is the Regimental Best Gun Competition in which all the Gun Detatachments in the Regiment compete against one another in various aspects of their duties. e.g. 1. Coming into action (All the individul duties of the detachment are marked) 2. Coming out of action ( as above) 3. Anti-Tank Fire missions (Live firing) 4. Direct Fire mission (Live firing) 5. Driving Test. 6. Ammunititn Test 7. Camouflage and concealment. 8. First Aid. Normally this takes the whole day, I can tell you that you feel that you've been through a wringer at the end. The winning detachment normally gets a crate of beer and a pennent which you fly on your radio aerial. Hapy Days John
DrB Posted 27 January , 2005 Share Posted 27 January , 2005 The wearing of collar dogs was mandatory by 1880. The "chicken guts" on the sleeve and the nine button tunic indicate that this was his "dress tunic.' The pillbox was very popular with the arty and worn until about 1899 when it was replaced by the field service cap. It continued to be worn in "walking out" for another two years.
