If it's  "forfeited" it's normally after a conviction for a serious Military offence e.g. conviction at a General Courts Martial or in absentia for Deserters.

Sometimes forfeiture was for a cvil offence. Theft, serious assault and even bigamy l have seen over the years.

Thanks for that realy grateful, my great great grandfather was court martialed for desertion after serving 6 years 228 day and forfeited all time served so far in 1847. He was also flogged twice, once in 1847, for striking a sergeant and using threatening language to a sergeant major, and once in 1854 for being drunk in the trenches on the night before the battle of Savastopol. He was discharged after recieving a severe gunshot wound to the top of the head. in the battle of the Redan 1856.
