MKC Posted 22 March , 2019 Share Posted 22 March , 2019 (edited) Victory Medal: all officers, warrant officers, NCOs and ORs of the British, Dominion, Colonial and Indian forces; members of women's formations enrolled under direct contract, MOs, Nursing sisters, nurses, and others employed in Military hospitals who actually served on the establishment in a defined theatre of war within the defined period. YMCA and Red Cross workers with honarary rank were also awarded the medal. For Australians, almost everyone who served overseas and within a defined theatre of war received the medal: It did not include Aust Munitions and Aust War workers who served in France & Belgium. British War Medal: the above who rendered service overseas between 5 August 1914 and 11 Nov 1918. For Australians, a person had to have left the last port of call in Australia between those dates in order to receive the medal. It did not include Aust Munitions and Aust War workers who served in England. An example or two: (1) troop ship leaving Australia in Nov 1918 and upon reaching Durban, is recalled: all troops aboard received the BWM, but not the VM. (2) Australian deployed to the UK only: received the BWM, but not the VM. (3) Australian deployed to the UK, then to France even for a couple of days: BWM and VM. (4) Australian departs Melbourne in 1916 on a troopship on the way to the UK, but falls ill and is disembarked in Fremantle to hospital. Dies: gets no medals. Hope that helps.
