BO'NESS WELCOME HOME FUND
Surplus may be spent on Memorial grounds
BLACKNESS PROBLEM
A long dlscusslon on how the surplus — approximately £170 - remaining from the Bo'ness Welcome Home Fund ahould be dlspoeed of took place at a meeting over which Councillor John G. Collee, Convener of the Committee, presided in the Burgh Chambers last Thursday evening.
…….
PLAQUE FOB BLACKNESS
At an earlier stage, the convener had reported that the two plaques, bearing the names of the Bo'ness and Blackness men who made the supreme sacrifice during the second world war, would be ready for delivery at an early date. The cost of the plaques was £145 15s and £28 10s respectively.
Authority for the handing over of the Bo'ness plaque to the Town Council, for erection at the War Memorial, was given by the Committee, and considerable discussion centred round the procedure which should be adopted regarding the plaque for Blackness.
The convener said that had been unable, despite exhaustive inquiries, to find out who was responslble for the Blackness War Memorial. He thought their best course might be to hand over the plaque to the Blackness Welcome Home Committee, on the understanding that they in turn would deliver to the proper authority or committee who acted as custodians of the Memorial.
Judge M'Lean said he thought the proper procedure would be to hand . the plaque over to the District ; Council.
The convener said the question of Blackness War Memorial had already been referred to the District. Council, but they had refused to have anything to do with It.
District Councillor William Wotherspoon said If the responsible people in Blackness wanted the District Connell to accept responsibility for the War Memorial, he had no doubt that they would be willing to do so. But the request must come from Blackness people. "We have tried to do one or two things down there,* he added, “but we have only got our fingers rapped."
It was agreed to adopt the convener's suggestion, and that he, with Councillor Baptle and Mr William Miller, chairman of the District Council, should meet the Blackness Welcome Home Committee on the question.
