Guest Posted 11 March , 2019 Share Posted 11 March , 2019 I am trying to find information on James Irish of the 7th Hussars, Regimental number 580. He served in India during WW1 and was a corporal, later acting sergeant, with the 10th Mobile Veterinary Section. Any information on the soldier or the unit(s) would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Doug
Mark1959 Posted 12 March , 2019 Share Posted 12 March , 2019 (edited) Welcome Plenty of pointers on researching a soldier at https://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/soldiers/ His medal cards shows British War Medal only - consistent with India only overseas service. Number given as 580 or H/580 Also shows an India General Service Medal with the Afghahanistan NWF 1919 Clasp (NWF = North West Frontier) The address for him on the reverse of the card is Police Force, Bangalore India - this looks to be in about 1925. edit - Medal roll for IGSM confirms 7th Hussars attached No 10 Mobile Veterinary Section That gives a discharge date of 2/2/1920 under paragraph XXI - which is the termination of his period of engagement findmypast have a record for him in a book - not sure what the book is Enlisted 7th Hussars 23/5/1907 in Dorchester. Declared age 19 y 5m Farm Labourer Born in Churchstanton (Clayhidon) near Wellington, Somerset. Marries a Lillian Leipenstein in Bangalore on 24/11/1913 Has a child Reginald Valentine 3/12/1914 in Bangalore Shows in India from ? - written as 11 then 10 over 11 to discharge. So from 1911 latest I think. Corporal on discharge. Forwarding address c/o Inspector General of Police, Madras edit Looks as it he had the middle name Valentine - his mother's maiden name He was widowed and re-married.on 7/2/1923 in Bangalore. Wife's name Alice Maud Rice His birth was registerd 4th Quarter 1887 in Taunton In 1891 and 1901 with his family in Churchstantion A school record gives his dob as 24/11/1887. Cannot find a Death record for him yet Sadly his service papers appear not to have survived. Hope that helps Edited 12 March , 2019 by Mark1959
