FenClare Posted 10 March , 2019 Share Posted 10 March , 2019 Can anyone help me find out anything about the career of Serjeant Walter Ernest Haydon [no SE/152] in the Army Veterinary Corps? I think that he survived the war. He was not the Haydon in the Farriers whom you helped me find a few weeks ago, but Walter Haydon did work with horses during WW1. Many thanks
HarryBrook Posted 10 March , 2019 Share Posted 10 March , 2019 His medal index card confirms his service number as SE/152 Army Veterinary Corps; first entered a theatre of war, France, 5 November 1914; rank on British War Medal and Victory Medal roll - Staff Sergeant. Mentioned in Sir Douglas Haig's despatch of 8 November 1918 https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/31088/supplement/15215 which gives his rank as Acting Staff Sergeant and that he was stationed at 7th Veterinary Hospital. FenClare Posted 10 March , 2019 Author Share Posted 10 March , 2019 Thank you - shall pass this on to his grandson who used to talk to him and may have a photo. I will see what I can find out about the 7th Veterinary Hospital - presumably it was over in France Regards FenClare
