Guest Posted 25 February , 2019 Share Posted 25 February , 2019 I'm a brand new member and have done a search before posting but couldn't find what I was looking for. During my research I discovered a VAD nurse who had died at Ripon Camp, well, one hundred years ago this Friday actually. I'm not doing very well in finding out general info about Ripon Camp, pictures, what they did there etc and wondered if anyone could help. Thanks! MaxD Posted 25 February , 2019 Share Posted 25 February , 2019 There was a 670 bed hospital there, this will help with researching a nurse http://www.scarletfinders.co.uk/2.html This thread dealt with the camp, there may be others. https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/107157-ripon-camp-reception-dispersal-of-british-pows/ Little bit about it here: http://www.ripon.co.uk/history/townandcity.html Search the net - Ripon army camp WW1 - gives a number of hits to look at. Jim Strawbridge Posted 27 February , 2019 Share Posted 27 February , 2019 If you are referring to Zoe Sutcliffe she was a clerk - not a nurse.
frev Posted 28 February , 2019 Share Posted 28 February , 2019 She had however, been a nurse at Sleights Red Cross Hospital, Sleights from 1914 to 1918: https://vad.redcross.org.uk/Card?fname=zoe&sname=sutcliffe&id=202146&last=true Clerk Ripon 1919: https://vad.redcross.org.uk/Card?fname=zoe&sname=sutcliffe&id=202145&first=true
Jim Strawbridge Posted 28 February , 2019 Share Posted 28 February , 2019 I accept that she did both - earlier (from 1914) as a nurse) and later (from 1919) as a paid clerk. Out of interest her headstone has G.S. after her name which, to me, means General Service, and implies non-nursing duties. At least the CWGC have added her for commemoration from January 2019 so however you view her service she will be remembered.
