Remembered Today:

1st Class Gunnery badge

Does anyone have chapter and verse for the criteria for this badge, which from memory was crossed gun barrels with a crown above?

Could it be worn by both RFA and RGA pre-WW1?

Hey Paul....langleybaston will answer that one for you. If he doesn't nibble at this, send him a PM.

Thanks to you both - any thoughts would be appreciated.

How did one differentiate between 1st and 2nd Class; color of the weave of the badge?

Oh well, here goes, don't all shout at once.

In 1914 regulations the 1st class gunnery prize [for Horse, Field, Heavy and Garrison Arty] was G with laurel wreath and crown ..... one for each battery [second was star for crown, third was G with wreath].

These seem to have replaced the crossed guns with crown in 1892, which latter were awarded from 1898 to every man in the Prize-Winning Battery, including the individual winner.

A word of explanation. My co-author of 'British Army Proficiency Badges' was an ex-WO I of RA. He masterminded all the artillery information ....... would I dare!

What were the circumstances of the award of this, David? You say "prize winning battery" - was it part of a competition and how did they select people for it?

The implication of the wording is that it was whole batteries versus whole batteries, but you need an Arty expert, not a badge afficionado I am afraid.
