mbriscoe Posted 14 May , 2019 Author Share Posted 14 May , 2019 Memorial has been cleaned since photographed in 2010 so all inscriptions now readable. From my machine translation of the inscription, I presume it approximates to being a District War Memorial? Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 14 May , 2019 Share Posted 14 May , 2019 (edited) Hi Martin, The inscription just says Penygroes. I can't see anything about 'and District'. I don't know about this hall specifically, but it looks of the style of so many others built in the 20s and 30s to remember the war dead. You will see the same englyn by R Williams Parry again. He was born in Talysarn and has connections with many places in Dyffryn Nantlle. Edited 14 May , 2019 by Dai Bach y Sowldiwr
mbriscoe Posted 14 May , 2019 Author Share Posted 14 May , 2019 A machine translation picked out something about boundary which made me think could be the district, including nearby villages but perhaps reading too much into it.
mbriscoe Posted 14 May , 2019 Author Share Posted 14 May , 2019 Still wondering about the Neuadd Goffa. A women's peace march started there in 1926 Quote Yma y daeth 2,000 o ferched ar y 27 mai 1926 i gychwyn y Bererindod Heddwch dan y faner "HEDD NID CLEDD"

mbriscoe Posted 14 May , 2019 Author Share Posted 14 May , 2019 Perhaps show not to trust machine translation! Usually gives a rough idea of the meaning though!
JPB Posted 17 August , 2022 Share Posted 17 August , 2022 (edited) I believe the Memorial Hall Neuadd Goffa was an extension to the old Town Hall. I think the date over the door says 1933 but it may be 1930. The roof on this part of the building has been changed since and the date is no longer visible. The sign over the door mentioning the Peace Pilgrimage is not present as of August 2022 and was also not present in these photos taken before the roof was changed. JPB Posted 17 August , 2022 Share Posted 17 August , 2022 The old Town Hall appears to have been there before the war memorial. The first photo may date from 1890 but that is purely a guess. It appears that the memorial was erected sometime between the end of WW1 and 1933 or 1930 when the Memorial Hall was built as an extention to the Town Hall. I can't find out much more information about this building but would be interested if anyone knows more about it?
