Peter Bennett Posted 11 February , 2019 Share Posted 11 February , 2019 His records have survived and state that he died on 23rd March 1918 in No. 56 CCS, if that was at Gezaincourt it would be unusual that he has no known grave but if it was still at Dernancourt (Edgehill) when he was buried it would explain why his grave was lost, as he is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. Would anyone know where exactly No. 56 CCS was on the 23rd. Thank you Private LEDGARD, HAROLD Service Number 38719 Died 23/03/1918 Aged 22 7th Bn.York and Lancaster Regiment Son of Harvey Ledgard, of 35, Tenter Croft Rd., Crackenedge Lane, Dewsbury, Yorks. Commemorated at ARRAS MEMORIAL Cemetery/memorial reference: Bay 8.

Mark1959 Posted 11 February , 2019 Share Posted 11 February , 2019 Dernancourt, according to the CWGC, was evacuated on 26/3/18 due to the German advance. Not re-captured until 9/8/18. Interestingly they say the 56 CCS was there April 1917 to Feb 1918. So in theory gone by 23/3/18 but WD would be a primary source.
