Remembered Today:

HMHS Soudan

I am seeking the places visited by HMHS Soudan in 1920, when my grandfather served on her in the RAMC. Can anyone please tell me where to look for the ship's log for this year? I have investigated The National Archives but found only records for 1914 and 1915.

With thanks in anticipation, Mike

The Soudan, 6,680 tons, P&O Steam Nav Co, was a Naval Hospital ship from 3 August 1914 to 22 March 1919, at which time it changed to a troopship for the period 23 March 1919 to 22 June 1920.

From what I can gather, it was engaged in four trooping voyages during that period 1919-1920: UK to Australia May-June 1919; India to UK to India; Egypt to UK; and finally UK to India. Trooping voyages routinely had at least one Medical Officer on duty aboard, plus supporting staff such as female and/or male nursing staff. Do you know the date he joined the ship or a date he was known to be aboard?

MikeYted, what is your  grandfather's name? And birth, home details may help.

There are reports in papers.

eg: from FMPast - Manchester Evening News 25 March 1920

And the National Archives have passenger lists where ports are mentoned:

Mike,

The shipping section of the 'Times' reports the following voyages for the Soudan during 1920.  Most of these had calls at Port Said.  I don't know which were trooping voyages.

Southampton to Bombay: 20 Jan - 14 Feb 1920

Bombay to Southampton & Gravesend: 23 or 24 Feb - 25 Mar 1920

Gravesend to Bombay: 30 Apr - 24 May 1920

Bombay to Calcutta: 14 Nov - 23 Nov 1920

Calcutta to Gravesend: 17 Dec 1920 - 18 Jan 1921

Regards,

   Ralph

Thanks, Ralph,  those dates mesh nicely with post 3, with trooping ending in June:

1920 Trooping voyages from post 3 + post 5:

India to UK to India  = Southampton to Bombay: 20 Jan - 14 Feb 1920; Bombay to Southampton & Gravesend: 23 or 24 Feb - 25 Mar 1920

Egypt to UK = part of the Bombay to Southampton & Gravesend (above) - see the newspaper report in post 4.

UK to India = Gravesend to Bombay: 30 Apr - 24 May 1920

Mike
