MikeyH Posted 27 January , 2019 Share Posted 27 January , 2019 (edited) A delayed C*******s present, this well produced hardback from Historic England, looks at the 'physical remains left across England'. Covers practice trench lines, munitions works, government factories, army and POW camps, airfields etc. There are ten chapters, with an introduction by Sir Hew Strachan, and contibutions by archeologists and acknowledged experts in their fields. 242 well illustrated pages, with numerous black and white and colour photographs and relevant maps. By it's nature this can not hope to be a comprehensive survey, but is a good and interesting overview of the subject, recommended. Mike. Well, I don't think there is any comparable book out there, if this is the sort of thing you like, you will like it! Academically serious books do seem to be getting ever more expensive. Would say that not much of the contents is new information, but all presented in a very readable and accessible format. The subtitle is 'Building for Total War 1914-18', and most industries and aspects of the home front are covered Mike.
