Remembered Today:

Visiting Ypres

Dazscuba

Recommended Posts

I am visiting Ypres in March and am looking for some small CWGC sites to visit which are out of the way and not visited much.

Also some out of the way sites that you think are interesting.

I will be doing the normal ones so just looking for something different.

Thanks

On my last visit we spent the afternoon walking around the nature reserve at Palingbeek, sited on the old front line, and came across Chester Farm cemetery in the most peaceful surroundings. Highly recommended.

If it's a dark and dreary and rainy day: go to Ploegsteert Wood.

Start at Prowse Point Cemetery and walk down to Ploegsteert Wood cemetery.

Didn't quite feel at ease there (but then it was a dark, dreary, rainy day when I visited. May be different when it's a clear, bright, sunny day!)

Also: the Command Bunker at Kemmelberg.

It's 1950's, Cold War on steroids, so véry not WW1, but nevertheless véry véry véry interesting!
And while in the neighbourhood why not pay it a visit?

Need to book tickets in advance though:

Well worth the visit!

Daz, you may have already seen it but if you haven't the RE Grave on the ridge at Bellewaarde is a small site with lots of history. It's there because of the miners lost in the immediate area which was a tunnelling hot spot. from the ridge you can see back down to Hellfire Corner and Ypres itself, and see why the position was important, the Liverpool Scottish memorial is in the wood a little bit further along the path, as this was the debut of the 1/10th battalion in June 1915, and their medical officer, one Lt. Chavasse won the MC here.

Should you be going to the Kemmelberg it's also worth to climb the tower on top of the hill. Offers spectacular views over the battlefields of april/may 1918!
