Soldiers Died Great War states he was born in Sedgwick, Kendal, Westmorland .

Pennington was a territorial and probably enlisted pre-war or right at the start based on his number - as a territorial he wouldn't be overseas pre-war unless he had prior service as a regular soldier.

,Ancestry has a John Pennington at

16, High Fellside, Kendal (Sedgwick)

born 1886 although census 1891 looks like Job!

and another born 1888 also Kendal, but John Thomas

George

Don't think it is either of those after following their trails.

Another possibility is

Name: John Pennington

Baptism Date:11 Oct 1891

Parish: Skerton, St Luke, Lancashire, England

That links with info from FWR and FMP although not born in Sedgwick!

George

Search for clarity goes on...any other details available?

Apologies!! There are two J Penningtons who were in Border Regt and died in 1916! (1789 and 2256) and I think this one is 2256!
