Steve1871 Posted 18 January , 2019 Share Posted 18 January , 2019 I know there is a book out in Russian ( I no read Russian ) on it, but the 98/02 looks to be a slightly shorter blade than the S71 PFM , but for the modern Gew98. How rare is the 98/02, and anyone know how many were produced?By one company or a few? Thank you Guy's Steve

Thank you Guy's Steve It is indeed slightly shorter than the hybrid ‘Pfm 71/98’ as used in China, with an overall length of 61.3 cm, and blade 48 cm long. Will check on makers later as I have to go to work...
trajan Posted 18 January , 2019 Share Posted 18 January , 2019 (edited) The Russian book is very nicely illustrated and it has updated the years of production of the S.98/05 by the various makers. I don't read Russian either (well, I am beginning to get the bayonet terminology!) - I haven't checked if it updated the S.98/02 list though. Anyway, makers of the S.98/02 as according to Carter volume 1: Prussia - all known example (25) are ERFURT - but five cross-guard marked to Saxon regiments. Bavaria - G.C.HAENEL (7), and V.C.SCHILLING (7) Saxony - G.C.HAENEL (11), and V.C.SCHILLING (7) That's it! Steve1871 Posted 19 January , 2019 Author Share Posted 19 January , 2019 So maybe 1000 98/02 left for us collectors to fight over, and 80% tucked away in collections?
zuluwar2006 Posted 19 January , 2019 Share Posted 19 January , 2019 Steve The recorded examples for 98/02 on 2009 were 406 in all the known collectors and museums. Offcourse is sure that the number is much bigger. I have seen the last 10 years at least 100 more. But the numbers are limited as you understand. And is much desired bayonet and expensive as well. trajan Posted 19 January , 2019 Share Posted 19 January , 2019 Hi Dimitrios, kali mera or καλημέρα” if you prefer! Interesting figure that for surviving 98/02... Can't remember seeing it before - was it from Roy?
zuluwar2006 Posted 19 January , 2019 Share Posted 19 January , 2019 Yes during the research of his first book for german bayonets, he had gathered and all the recorded examples from 98/02 bayonets from known collectors and museums. Until 2009 he added some more. But the listing was for those numbers.

Steve1871 Posted 19 January , 2019 Author Share Posted 19 January , 2019 I should have known Demitrios would have one, a very nice one with unit marking and scabbard too. I think he should set up a small bayonet museum for the rare and obscure😃 Bravo D'!
