john white Posted 16 January , 2019 Share Posted 16 January , 2019 Dear Members The above soldier was born in Carmarthen in 1887. During the Great War he served in the Welsh Regiment and in 1918 he was captured and held as a prisoner at Schneidemudl Camp.Is it possible to find out any details about him? He was a corporal and his Regimental number was 21857. A copy of his Medal Index Card is attached Regards John White

john white Posted 16 January , 2019 Author Share Posted 16 January , 2019 Dear Neil Thanks for your reply, I didn't realise What "SWB " stood for except for South Wales Borderers. Regards John White
Mark1959 Posted 16 January , 2019 Share Posted 16 January , 2019 We seem to have a conflict here. Jan 1918 discharged and taken POW in 1918. Not possible.

john white Posted 17 January , 2019 Author Share Posted 17 January , 2019 Dear Members Mark makes a valid point. His relation told me that he was a prisoner in Schneidemudl prison in 1918 but obviously it would have been 1917 when he was taken prisoner. He is confirmed as being in the 13th Battalion Welch Regiment. Regards John White
john white Posted 18 January , 2019 Author Share Posted 18 January , 2019 Dear Members On reflection it could have been earlier than 1917 as he enlisted in 1914. Copy of Silver War Badge list attached. Regards John White
charlie2 Posted 18 January , 2019 Share Posted 18 January , 2019 John, I think you have latched onto the wrong John Owen Thomas. The Thomas you want is 260140 Cpl JO Thomas, Monmouthshire Regt attached South Wales Borderers, previously 200379 Welch Regt. He was held at Schneidemühl in 1918. https://grandeguerre.icrc.org/en/File/Details/5041739/3/2/ Charlie
john white Posted 21 January , 2019 Author Share Posted 21 January , 2019 Dear Charlie and Members Yes I think it all makes sense. Sorry about the confusion. The correct Medal index Card is attached. One other enquiry. How do you know he was at Schneidemuhl prison? Regards John White
charlie2 Posted 21 January , 2019 Share Posted 21 January , 2019 From the Red Cross records I linked to, you have to enter the PA numbers into the search box on the right, then another document is revealed. Charlie

MaxD Posted 21 January , 2019 Share Posted 21 January , 2019 You should have seen on the additional documents the date he was captured and the place Cambrai 3 Dec 1917. My reading is that he was with 2nd Battalion SWB fighting at Marcoing Copse (Battle of Cambrai), one of 100 men missing between 30 Nov and 3 Dec. War diary is here: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7353579 Max
john white Posted 22 January , 2019 Author Share Posted 22 January , 2019 Dear Max D Thank you for your reply. Yes, I did know that he was captured at Cambrai on December 3rd 1917 but nothing beyond that as I had not seen the War Diaries. I will do so. Thanks once again.
