doogal Posted 21 January , 2005 Share Posted 21 January , 2005 Hi I had the good fortune to go to Chalfont St Giles a couple of days ago. We parked opposite the memorial. It's made of wood, and looks to be designed to be similar to a triptych with polished stainless steel panels for the names on each of the panels. It is very well kept. I've never seen a war memorial like it - or that "posh", as it clearly requires a great deal of care and maintenance to keep it in this high state of repair. Just for interest's sake, does anyone know anyhting more about the memorial, and why it's such a unique design - is it unique even? regards doogal
Gary Samson Posted 21 January , 2005 Share Posted 21 January , 2005 Hi doogal, Do you have a photo of the memorial you could post? Gary
doogal Posted 21 January , 2005 Author Share Posted 21 January , 2005 Hi Gary, unfortunately, I didn't have a camera (it was dark as well) I've had a look on the internet, and can't find a single picture of it anywhere - plenty about Chalfont St Giles. off to ebay for a camera.... regards doogal
robbie Posted 21 January , 2005 Share Posted 21 January , 2005 Is this the church you mean? Robbie http://www.countyviews.com/bucks/church.htm
doogal Posted 21 January , 2005 Author Share Posted 21 January , 2005 Hi robbie, thanks for posting the picture - in fact, the war memorial I saw was on the main street, next to a pub called The Feathers. I'll have another look on the internet and see if I can find something regards doogal
robbie Posted 21 January , 2005 Share Posted 21 January , 2005 Here's a photo of The Feathers Pub (left)..if only we could view it from a slightly different angle. Robbie
doogal Posted 23 January , 2005 Author Share Posted 23 January , 2005 Hi robbie, yes, the memorial is just off to the left of the the picture - every I've seen picture seems to just miss it. regards ddogal
Sparky53 Posted 23 January , 2005 Share Posted 23 January , 2005 Is there any name wanted on the memorial? It is only up the road from me I could go and zap it Jane
Gary Samson Posted 23 January , 2005 Share Posted 23 January , 2005 I was just intrigued by doogal's description of the memorial, Jane. If you ever find yourself passing by with your camera I'd certainly like to see a photo of it but don't make a special trip. Gary
SPotter Posted 23 January , 2005 Share Posted 23 January , 2005 Jane, I would be interested to know if Arthay Roy SHUREY is named on the memorial. He was actually born in Blewbury, Berkshire, but was a resident of Chalfont St. Giles on enlistment. He was killed in action on 27/09/1918 whilst serving with the 5 Bn Dorset Regt in France. I have no connection with him - his rather unusual first name came up in the course of my research and just wondered whether SDGW was indeed correct! Thanks Steve
Sparky53 Posted 23 January , 2005 Share Posted 23 January , 2005 Steve the War Memorial has Arthur Shurey I expect it is a typo on SDGW. There is only 1 Arthur Shurey in 1901 Census and CWGC site too http://www.cwgc.org/cwgcinternet/casualty_...asualty=2943607 Jane

Sparky53 Posted 23 January , 2005 Share Posted 23 January , 2005 You can see how highly polished it is here. THis is the WW1 Section complete Jane
SPotter Posted 26 January , 2005 Share Posted 26 January , 2005 Jane, Many thanks for the confirmation and photos - what an unusual memorial! Arthur was a sensible guess as to Shurey's proper name, but what a typo! Thanks again, Steve
doogal Posted 27 January , 2005 Author Share Posted 27 January , 2005 Hi Jane, thanks for sorting us out with a picture. It looks even better with daylight. regards doogal
