Remembered Today:

Salford Cathedral memorials

I recently visited Salford Cathedral to have a look at the memorial chapel. The Cathedral itself is well worth a look so I thought that I would share some images.

Again, please take what you need if you are researching any of the fallen.

This is the memorial chapel which I thought was well done. Of particular interest was the information boards explaining its development.

  • 3 years later...

I have just completed revising the memorials in this Chapel for the IWM's Register - you'll find them at WMR100307 (the Chapel itself); WMR 15985 (the main tablets); and WMR 75894 (the tablets for Brothers of the St Vincent de Paul Society killed). Unfortunately the information panels described here are no longer on display. As described, the chapel was repurposed, and some of the fittings relating to its earlier dedications remain - the windows and the pieta, for instance - and I have omitted them from the description.

However, the Altar was replaced, and a plaque at the entrance informs that it was erected as a Thankoffering by Frederick and Elizabeth Ryder. One of the information panels above suggests that this was in memory of one of those commemorated - Sgt. T Ryder. Leaving aside giving thanks for someone killed, Sgt Ryder is stated by CWGC as being the son of William and Ellen Ryder of Salford. It is more than likely that the Altar was given to give thanks for the safe return of member(s) of Frederick and Elizabeth's family - I attach an image of the central feature of the Altar - the arch above the crucifix - which terminates in two carvings of young men - perhaps the men who returned safely...?
