The Bendigonian Posted 10 January , 2019 Share Posted 10 January , 2019 I have this photo of my great uncle Keith Harder and his best mate Les Ward and am looking for some information on the Uniforms Les Ward, second from left in the back row. Keith Harder, second from right in back row. Just wondering about some of the Uniforms in this photo as they just seem a little different to what i would expect. Some of the hats also look different to what i would expect i know the photo was taken early in the war before they left Australia. I think the photo was taken at the Coburg cricket ground in Victoria. maybe just some sort of training unit ? I know they both enlisted on the same day and later in France both were stretcher bearers in the 12th Australian Field Ambulance any ideas. ForeignGong Posted 10 January , 2019 Share Posted 10 January , 2019 Hi I'm no expert but it looks like a mix of early A.I.F. and Militia uniforms. I believe that if a soldier had been or was serving in a militia unit prior to enlisting, they were encouraged to wear their uniforms until A.I.F. ones were available. The chap far right standing and middle and RHS sitting appear to be militia. Bit hard to see properly from this photo. Peter
Kimberley John Lindsay Posted 11 January , 2019 Share Posted 11 January , 2019 Dear Bendigonian, My grandfather (W. F. Lindsay, 1880-1940; 53rd Bn) had a 1914 AIF commission from the Militia, and the attached photos show his progression of uniforms from 1914 to 1918 and later... Kindest regards, Kim.
